Why Do I Need Cheek Filler?

Check out the lift and definition this gorgeous client got by adding a little cheek filler!

Let’s talk cheeks!

While cheek filler is not the most common request I get, it is definitely my most common recommendation! Adding filler to the mid face can provide contour, definition, and support the surrounding tissue to give a more rested and youthful appearance.

I’m not saying cheek filler is the answer to world peace, but it is probably the answer to rejuvenating your face.

Let’s discuss different reasons why you may need cheek filler:

You weren’t blessed with perfect cheek bones

Not everyone is born with cheek bones like Angelina Jolie or Gisele. If you crave a little oomph in the mid face, you might need cheek filler! Adding filler is the perfect way to define this area of the face, even if you weren’t blessed with naturally strong cheeks. I’m not suggesting everyone should model their cheeks after these celebrities, but by adding filler to less prominent cheeks, you can enhance your overall facial appearance by creating balance.

You want that flawless contour make-up look but don’t know the difference between a blush brush and a blending brush

OK… guilty here! I couldn’t contour to save my life. If you follow me on social media or know me in real life, you know that I rarely wear make-up. When I do, it is the most basic swipe of powder and I’m moving on. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE that air brushed, contoured look but it’s just not in my skill set.

So if you love the look of contour but aren’t into doing it with make-up, cheek filler might be the answer. I will place the filler in strategic places to allow the light to hit your face differently and create that contoured appearance… without having to pick up the blending brush!

You have deep nasolabial folds (a.k.a. smile lines)

Filling the nasolabial folds is one of the most commonly requested areas for filler treatment. Everyone has these lines, which extend from the corner of your nose towards the corner of your mouth. As you age and lose volume in your midface, these lines can become deeper and more prominent. Instead of blasting these lines with filler to smooth them out, the better option is to treat the cause of the deep lines by replacing cheek volume! This will allow the midface to give more support and lift, which will in turn soften the nasolabial fold.

You want to look more rested and refreshed

If you feel like you look tired all the time, you might need cheek filler! The first and most obvious area of volume loss is in the mid face. As you lose volume here due to genetics and the natural aging process, you may give off a tired or sad look. By replacing lost volume with cheek filler, it can give you a more rested and happy appearance! It will help to support the tissue in your lower face which tends to sag and cause deep lines over time. Getting cheek filler is an awesome way to give yourself a subtle refresh.

You have a dark circles under your eyes

So dark circles have TONS of different causes, and the answer to treating them isn’t always cheek filler, but it is definitely one of the places I start! By adding filler to the cheeks, it will support the under-eye area and can soften the look of hollowness in that area. Because adding volume to the cheeks also changes the way light hits your face, it can be very impactful to the undereye. Prior to considering filler for the tear trough or under eye area, I will always make sure you have enough volume in your mid face. It is fairly common for me to recommend cheek filler first in clients who come to me requesting under eye filler!

So now that you know you need it, what else do you need to know?

Cheek filler is a relatively comfortable area to treat, and the types of fillers I use contain lidocaine which is a numbing medication. Usually, 2 syringes are needed to make a big impact, but this depends on your anatomy and desired outcome. I do offer a multi syringe discount when treating the cheeks.

Most often, I treat this area with a needle and place the product deeply to mimic bone. Sometimes I use a cannula (blunt edge injecting tool) to contour the cheek, especially closer to the middle of the face. After the procedure you can expect mild bruising and swelling which usually resolves in 1-2 weeks.

On the day of the procedure, you will want to avoid exercising and sleep propped up on a few pillows. This will keep the swelling and bruising to a minimum while preventing the filler from being squished into places we don’t want it! I also recommend avoiding dental work for the 2 weeks before the procedure and for 2 weeks after.
