Intro to Chemical Peels
Maybe you are already a pro at chemical peels, or maybe you are a complete novice. Is the thought of your skin peeling off in sheets holding you back? Maybe you have heard that peels are a seasonal treatment and you can’t do them in the summer. In this blog I’d like to discuss the various types of chemical peels that are offered at Even Esthetics™!
What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel is a treatment where a chemical solution is applied to the skin to promote exfoliation of the outermost layers of skin. The most common area to treat is the face, however chemical peels can be useful on any skin including the neck, decolletage, and upper arms.
What will a chemical peel do for me?
Chemical peels are utilized to target many different skin issues. Because they are so versatile, we can customize a peel to fit your needs. Chemical peels can improve texture, discoloration/hyperpigmentation, scars, sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles, and even sagging skin! Through a controlled injury to the skin, the chemical peel will exfoliate the top layer of the skin to reveal the fresh skin underneath, leaving you looking rejuvenated and refreshed!
I’ve heard that you should only get chemical peels in the fall and winter, is that true?
The theory that chemical peels are a seasonal treatment is not entirely true. While some peels are best left to times with minimal sun exposure, chemical peels are a fantastic year-round treatment for most people. I tend to recommend deeper peels that are targeting discoloration for the fall and winter months to minimize the amount of heat and sun that fresh skin is exposed to. But for all other peels, it’s game on!
What types of peels do you offer at Even Esthetics™?
Even Esthetics™ has a variety of peels available, so we can find the perfect fit for your goals and preferences. Because I love a good food analogy, I’ve broken up the peels into “salsa” spiciness categories:
Mild: The ZO custom no-downtime peel
This peel is the perfect pre- event, lunchtime, or anytime peel! No prep required and no physical peeling. Safe to repeat weekly.
Medium: AlphaRet Pro Peel 30
Requires 2 weeks of prep on a retinoid product, gives results over 4 weeks. No physical peeling. Safe to repeat monthly.
Medium/Spicy: AlphaRet Pro Peel 50
A bit spicier than the Pro Peel 30. May induce a small amount of peeling. Safe to repeat monthly.
Spicy: ZO 3 Step Peel
Requires a minimum of 6 weeks on a retinoid prior to scheduling the peel. The skin will peel in large sheets, approximately 5-7 days “downtime”. Safe to repeat monthly.
How do I know which peel is right for me?
Easy- just ask! We can discuss your goals, current home skincare regimens, budget, and availability for downtime. Based on these things, we will formulate a plan that will best meet your needs. If you are unsure or wanting to start very slowly, I recommend starting with the ZO No downtime peel, we can always “spice it up” with further treatments!
